WEATHER

November proves to be unusually cold this year, with a heavy frost setting in around the second day of the month and lingering throughout. Temperatures during the day are brisk, leading toward positively cold nights, and some begin to wonder whether the school will see an early snowfall this year. Flurries will begin to set in around the 28th of the month.

ONGOING THROUGH NOVEMBER

GIVE THANKS! November ushers in the last of the harvest festivals, and with them, people are encouraged to come together and give thanks for the bountiful harvest for the year. What does this entail? Festivals around the area, usually with livestock and produce, and, of course, parties with lots and lots of food!
EXAMS! The dreaded mid-terms. You knew this time was coming. Did you study for your tests? Do your tests even matter to you? Teachers, are you a sadist? Or will you show your poor students a bit of mercy (the answer is no, you should never show them mercy)? Heaven or Hell, let's rock these tests!
WATCH OUT! The campus has become a dangerous place lately, and we don't just mean the monster attacks! With temperatures dipping below freezing, frost and ice will begin to spread at a surprising rate. It seems a bit suspicious, actually...
OPEN HOUSE! This time of year is notorious for family members to stop by and visit, and, as such, Valoran Institute will be hosting an open house during the early part of the month. Catch up with your dear aunts and uncles, pester your kid siblings, or maybe just try to avoid getting embarrassed by your parents. Good luck, it never works.

MONSTERS OF THE MONTH!
Things seem to be relatively quiet around the campus, surprisingly enough. It seems that those valorous vigilantes have been gaining a bit of notoriety, judging by how the student body has begun talking about them. But don't get too complacent. Rumor has it that strange robed figures have been spotted around the campus, late at night.

MINI EVENT!

MID-TERM STRETCH! With mid-terms over around the 13th, the faculty have gotten together to play a game. In line with their tradition of nurturing young, strong and tactical minds, they have concocted what they call the Mid-Term Stretch! Students will be pitted against each other in a competition. The sport? To be determined. Although rumor has it that it may have something to do with paint...

There's a new kid on campus. He looks kind of similar to the transfer student from Zaun who showed up a month or two ago, but this one is clearly a bit older, lacks the distinctive mohawk and facepaint, and always looks like he's short on sleep.

Oddly enough, no one can remember actually seeing him in any classes. He just sort of loiters around between them, and has a strange habit of vanishing when your back is turned.

Right now, he seems to be hanging outside the science building, watching the loading dock for all the expensive toys this school gets and eating a sandwich.

[ Rubbing her nose a bit, Lux blinks a few times, the cold weather starting to sting her eyes. She never did well with cold. Cold was much better experienced inside, near a fireplace, preferably with something hot to drink.

Walking toward the science building, Lux noticed a student she hadn't seen before. Or had she? She felt like she might have, maybe in passing. She was terrible with faces sometimes. He seemed focused on something, and while she knew normally it was impolite to ask, she couldn't help but be a bit nosy.

She could call it being helpful. That's what she usually called it, anyway. ]

Anything interesting? I heard we were getting some new equipment coming into the Chem lab.

[ After Professor Ziggs decided to "accidentally" blow up a few things. "They were old, they were on their way out anyway." Everyone knew he just wanted new toys to play with. ]

Hmm?

[Who was- Oh shit it's Lux. Why does he keep running into her? Stay cool, don't say something stupid and blow your cover.]

You've always got some expensive new thing showin' up around here. I don't know where you even put it all.

[Today, or at least some time this week, the lab was going to get several key components needed for the time machine. If he could just damage them somehow, maybe the whole thing would fall apart right there.]

[ He must have been a newer student, making an observation like that. She smiled a bit. ]

From what I've heard, the board of trustees makes sure that we're well-equipped for just about anything. I know the chairman makes sure that students here are well taken care of, especially when it comes to math and sciences. It's exciting for those of us in the department.

We might even be able to contend with schools like Piltover Prep as far as technology is concerned.

[ She paused. ]

Well, maybe that's a bit of wishful thinking, but one can hope right?

Ha! Piltie Prep. They throw money at everything like it'll make them a better school. I'd laugh if it wasn't kinda sad.

[The last time Ekko had met who he still thought of as the "real" Lux, she had barely spoken at all anymore. This one was just chattering on like nothing was wrong in the whole world. It was...surreal.

Something didn't make any sense there, though.]

Steadmann's big on math and science? I thought he was more of a new age hippie arts kinda guy.

They still beat us at our last meet, so all that money must be doing them some good.

[ She huffed a bit, still sore about it. She and Ezreal did fine--great even, much to her surprise--but the rest of the team was lacking. It might have been different if Ori was there, maybe. Somehow their team felt incomplete.

Hearing a name she didn't recognize, the blond blinked a few times. ]

Steadmann? Who's that?

Um.

The Chairman.

[Shit things couldn't be diverging THIS much already, could they?]

Isn't he?

[ Lux looked thoroughly confused. ]

No, you must be thinking of somewhere else.

[ Someone didn't read his entry pamphlet very well, did he? That's okay, it's a good thing he ran into her! ]

The chairman's name is Jericho Swain. He just took the position this year, and already we've seen a vast improvement overall, especially here at V Cad. It's wonderful, really.

Swain is Chairman?

[For the first time in the conversation, Lux got the impression that she was getting this guy's full attention. Probably because he just turned around to face her fully and grabbed her by the shoulders. He wanted to make absolutely sure there was no confusion on this point.]

Jericho Swain is Chairman of Valoran Academy? Is that what you're saying?

[Shit shit shit shit fuck fuck shit fuck shit shit shit fuck fuckshit HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?]

I wasn't sure when I heard a Nox--

[ All at once, she felt him get really close, his hands gripping her shoulders tightly. He looked rattled. Lux paused, looking up at him, searching his face for something. She was very obviously confused, but at the same time concerned. She didn't try to break away from his grasp; she didn't quite feel the need, somehow. ]

Of Valoran Institute. It's... in the introductory pamphlet. You know, the one we all got during orientation? It even has a statement from him, toward the back...

[ She would know. Welcoming committee. ]

...Why? Is something wrong?

Of the whole institute?

[Ekko hadn't read the pamphlet the FIRST time around. He certainly hadn't read it this time. He let go of her so he could start pacing and talking to himself.]

How is this even possible? I haven't even been here more than a few weeks, things shouldn't have been able to change that much. It's almost as if there's a second-

[Whatever fit of madness had overcome him deserted him just as quickly, freezing him in his tracks as he realized how this must look. His eyes tracked back over to Lux.]

Er...

Ah?

[ Lux tried to hold a reassuring smile as much as she could, but confusion set in, molding it into something completely different. ]

Are you sure you're okay? I mean, you dropped your sandwich, and now you're talking to yourself.

[ She was grasping at straws here. ]

I know midterms are stressful, but you seem really high-strung right now. I mean--no, that's not what I mean. Something is obviously bothering you, and it's okay that you don't remember something silly like the chair's name. I really only remember because he's from Noxus and, well... yeah, that doesn't sound right either...

[ She rubbed her temple a bit. The cold was really messing with her head. ]

Anyway, don't worry about it, okay? It's not like it's the end of the world. You'll be fine! Everything will work out, I promise!

[Can't babble about time travelers right now, in front of normals. What was it she had said? Was it time for midterms right now? People actually still worried about things like that right now. Ekko looked away, something tightening in his chest.]

...Yeah. Just stress. All those tests, right?

[ She smiles warmly, likely something he hasn't seen in a long time. It practically brightens the entirely loading area. ]

Stressing out about them that like will just make things worse. It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you think you're going to fail, then you'll most certainly fail. So you have to tell yourself, "I'm going to succeed. I have to succeed, no matter what!"

Studying helps too, of course, but a lot of exams are a mind game.

I do have to succeed.

[He rubbed his face while his mind furiously tried to process everything he had just learned. Also: how could he make Lux go away before his head exploded?]

Thanks. I've been here before, but a long time ago. Nothing is quite how I remember it, and some things are REALLY different. But your little pep talk helped.

[Telling her she had successfully helped would satisfy her, right?]

That's the spirit!

[ Any hidden meaning or intensity seems to be lost on her. She's just happy to help! ]

Oh? Where did you go? What brought you back to Valoran Academy?

[ Things Ekko didn't account for: Lux being nosy. ]

Zaun. I had to stop coming for financial reasons. This school ain't cheap.

Buuuut now I have a scholarship, so it's back into the lap of ridiculous luxury for me.

[The lie was smooth. It should be. He had worked it out ages ago and practiced it.]

[ A scholarship student, huh? That was pretty impressive. The fact that he was from Zaun was interesting as well, she wasn't sure she knew too many students, and the ones she did weren't nearly as genial. It was really refreshing. ]

Oh really? What kind of scholarship?

Well it was the OH look at the time gotta run!

[Note to self: come up with which scholarship it was before anyone else asks you.]

[ Oh, she hasn't seen this guy before. And Cassiopeia knows everybody.

Time to fix this. ]

[He had actually been so absorbed in doing his own thing he didn't even really register the flirting.]
