WEATHER

November proves to be unusually cold this year, with a heavy frost setting in around the second day of the month and lingering throughout. Temperatures during the day are brisk, leading toward positively cold nights, and some begin to wonder whether the school will see an early snowfall this year. Flurries will begin to set in around the 28th of the month.

ONGOING THROUGH NOVEMBER

GIVE THANKS! November ushers in the last of the harvest festivals, and with them, people are encouraged to come together and give thanks for the bountiful harvest for the year. What does this entail? Festivals around the area, usually with livestock and produce, and, of course, parties with lots and lots of food!
EXAMS! The dreaded mid-terms. You knew this time was coming. Did you study for your tests? Do your tests even matter to you? Teachers, are you a sadist? Or will you show your poor students a bit of mercy (the answer is no, you should never show them mercy)? Heaven or Hell, let's rock these tests!
WATCH OUT! The campus has become a dangerous place lately, and we don't just mean the monster attacks! With temperatures dipping below freezing, frost and ice will begin to spread at a surprising rate. It seems a bit suspicious, actually...
OPEN HOUSE! This time of year is notorious for family members to stop by and visit, and, as such, Valoran Institute will be hosting an open house during the early part of the month. Catch up with your dear aunts and uncles, pester your kid siblings, or maybe just try to avoid getting embarrassed by your parents. Good luck, it never works.

MONSTERS OF THE MONTH!
Things seem to be relatively quiet around the campus, surprisingly enough. It seems that those valorous vigilantes have been gaining a bit of notoriety, judging by how the student body has begun talking about them. But don't get too complacent. Rumor has it that strange robed figures have been spotted around the campus, late at night.

MINI EVENT!

MID-TERM STRETCH! With mid-terms over around the 13th, the faculty have gotten together to play a game. In line with their tradition of nurturing young, strong and tactical minds, they have concocted what they call the Mid-Term Stretch! Students will be pitted against each other in a competition. The sport? To be determined. Although rumor has it that it may have something to do with paint...

[ Lux still feels a bit strange about the whole thing (namely how calm and all right with it she is), but a distraction might be nice. ]

I've got some anime and some video games if you want to watch or play anything.

Video games?

[ She looks vaguely interested. ]

I'm not really allowed to play those. My dad says they take time away from studying.

Having a bit of fun isn't a waste of time, it's just finding the balance. Studying all day isn't really effective anyway. I've got a few different kinds here, what are you interested in? Fighting games, shooting games, RPGs, er, role-playing games, it basically means a game that's also a novel and a movie. Adventure and open world games. I've got a bunch, what sounds good?

[He gestures over to his shelf which is indeed stocked with all kinds of games with varying covers and artwork on them]

[ Lux looks a little overwhelmed. That's a lot to choose from. Um... ]

Are there any that we can both play? It isn't really fair if only one person can play the game.

I've got a few, yeah. Fighting games are basically arena things, we each pick a character and try to win in a fight. Shooting games can be multiplayer too, but they're not as fun one on one. I have a few cooperative RPGs and adventure games too, here, let me pull them out for you.

[The stack grows a lot smaller]

That sounds like it could be interesting. Let's try a fighting game.

Hmmm... how about this one. It's a bit technical, but the characters are all interesting and fun to play and the moves are all listed in the status screen so it's pretty easy to at least learn how things work.

[He grabs an anime-style game with a lot of very interesting looking characters wielding improbable weapons and boots it up, handing her a controller and the instruction manual]

There are some move lists in there, the directions are the direction you have to push the control stick in to pull it off. The letters refer to the strength of the attack required, there are several controller mappings on the first few pages of the instruction manual.

[ Lux takes the manual, immediately beginning to research. She looks at the page, then down at the controller, then at the page again, beginning to test out button combinations. ]

This looks really complex.

Yeah. These games are usually a bit tougher to start with, so up to you if you wanna try it.

You know I'm always up for a challenge. Bring it on!

[A few hours later]

HOW ARE YOU WINNING!?

[ladyofluminosity]

[ She does her best to not look smug. Although, judging from how much she's smiling, yeah, she might be a bit. But she also looks like she's having a blast. ]

I studied the manual. The controls are all pretty straight forward.

[indy_wannabe]

You just guard-cancelled into a combo I've never even seen before!

[ladyofluminosity]

Honestly, I wasn't sure if it would work, so I was pleasantly surprised!

[ Was being able to guard-cancel good? She only just started playing, she doesn't know any better. ]

[indy_wannabe]

So. You might not be there yet, but I think you're probably around the skill level of some of the best players in school. And you just started playing a few hours ago.

[ladyofluminosity]

What?

[ She laughs a bit, holding the controller in her lap. ]

No way! You're just being nice so you can catch me off-guard.

[indy_wannabe]

I can prove it. Give it a week or two, and then we'll enter you in the next tournament.

[ladyofluminosity]

A tournament? But I don't have time for something like that. Besides, I just started playing.

[indy_wannabe]

It's usually just one afternoon. You'll destroy them, trust me.

[ladyofluminosity]

[ Sigh. Why was he suddenly so determined about this? It was silly. Lux was almost certain that he was setting her up for failure, but she would at least humor him a bit. ]

All right, fine. So say I do this tournament. When is it? what are the rules?

[indy_wannabe]

It's right after finals, so it should be just before you go home for break. I can fish up the draft rules, it's a single elimination bracket with seeding based on how well you did in the last tournament. You'd probably have a pretty low seed but it won't be an issue for you. There's a bit of prize money if you win, and bragging rights of course.

[ladyofluminosity]

Right, break.

[ Lux pauses, looking down and drawing her lips into a thin line. After a moment, she shakes her head. ]

I'm not really interested in winning money. I don't like the idea of it.

[indy_wannabe]

It's out of the club budget, that's primarily what they use it for. That and buying the newest game. What's wrong, not looking forward to going home? Well, I guess if you're trying to avoid your folks it's probably not gonna be too fun...

That seems like a terrible use of a club budget. I wonder if the student council knows about that.

[ She looks down a bit. ]

My father is very busy, it would be inconvenient for him for me to go home for break.
